Helping Out with an Extreme Makover
Many of us have seen a variety of TV shows where-in a group of people get together and sometimes repair or even rebuild a home for a deserving family. One of our Car Host volunteers got involved in just such a project.
In the town of Colonie outside of Albany, a very deserving family was chosen as recipients of a brand new home. When the word spread about this endeavor, approximately 5,000 willing volunteers appeared to do the job. Only about 1,500 were needed and all who could work alternating 6 hour shifts until the new home was completed. One of our Car Hosts, Lori Fealey, who owns L. Fealey Construction in Sloansville arrived there in her pink hard hat, ready to go to work. Lori’s husband, Mike is a volunteer Conductor and Engineer on the ASRR. He works for General Electric in
Schenectady and received a notice saying the project was looking for skilled workers. Lori said “It’s right up my alley. First of all, it is the greatest thing anybody could do for a family. It’s indescribable, actually” she said. She was scheduled to work until 5 p.m. that day, “I’m going to see if I can pull some doubles. I don’t know if they are going to let me. I’m going to do whatever I can because that is why I am here.” This family and their new home were featured in a special 2 hour season finale on May 20, on WTEN Channel 10.
It was a wonderful thing for you to do, Lori, and I’m sure Mike is as proud of you as are the volunteers on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad.
